I’m starting a new daily practice.
I’m going to try to learn how to do a handstand. Unlike some of the other daily habits I do, this one has a pretty clear end point. I want to be able to do a freestanding handstand.
This is a practice I’ve actually tried before.
Last spring I practiced doing a handstand daily for a few weeks.
That had to stop though because I lost control of my electric skateboard in a patch of wet leaves like a duffus and wound up breaking my wrist.
Now it’s all healed up and feeling great so I want another crack at it.
Basically my process for starting a new daily habit is pretty straightforward, once I know what I want to start doing. First I need to make it clear in my mind what I want to accomplish. In this case it’s pretty simple but it’s a necessary step. When the day comes where I don’t feel like doing it, I’ll remind myself why I started.
I want to do this for fun. I think it would be a whole lot of fun to be able to do a handstand. It also will have the really great side benefit of increasing my core strength.
Now that I have that, I need to decide what the minimum I’ll be doing everyday is. Again this one is pretty simple. I’ll be getting upside down and or training my core and balance, at least once everyday.
When I did this before, I jumped right into trying handstands against the wall. While I did see progress, I think it might be better to take a slow and steady approach this time.
I’m going to start off by doing Crow Pose, to learn balance and gain wrist strength.
Then I’m going to move onto a tripod headstand to work on core strength.
Then I’ll graduate to a full on handstand, first against the wall then freestanding.
I found this progression from Minus The Gym, and it sounds good to me. I’ll link the playlist in the description if you’re also interested in learning to do a handstand.
As with all of my daily practices I’ll be checking in and reassessing this practice after one month, to see if it’s adding value to my life.
I know this isn’t going to be the easiest thing. I’m a tall dude at just under 6’6, there’s a lot of me to balance, but it’s possible, and I want to do it.
So I’m going to try.
Trapezoidal Drift is also a Youtube channel, and a Podcast, if either of those are your thing.
Thanks, I hope your day is going great.
